Tarewaanga Marae in Ōtorohanga has been without a tupuna whare for almost 80 years. The original whare, Te Rau a Te Moa, was dismantled due to its decaying state.
However, fundraising and financial support in recent years has meant the hapū of Ngāti Hinewai will finally receive a brand new tupuna whare, with building beginning this week. A karakia was held to mark the start of the building process, and kōwhatu mauri were placed into the whenua where the whare will soon stand.
