“Raranga, whatu and tukutuku encompass all of the things I’ve been drawn to as a kid and as an adult.

It’s the storytelling, it’s the whakapapa, it’s the reconnecting to my tūpuna.”

At the age of 19, Janaya Waitere was taught the art of raranga - It runs through her whakapapa. She says she’s always felt her tūpuna guiding her well before she realised this was her calling. Now, she’s passing on this mātauranga to the next generation of weavers, some of whom believe raranga is a journey of reclamation.
